Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are welcome at Newell House all year long for a wide range of roles.  Here are some volunteer opportunities that you might like to participate in sometime this year:

·         Master Gardeners are always appreciated at the Newell House Gardens.

·         Living History Interpreters for specific programs - call for information.

·         We have many volunteer opportunities to assist with our annual auction fundraiser and other events.

·         Do you have a special talent that would make a great living history program for our visitors?

If any of these activities sound interesting to you, please contact Judy Van Atta at Newell House
for more information about volunteer schedules and opportunities.

Projects:   New Foundation addition to Butteville School!  Many thanks to the Helen E. Austin Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation for it's generous grant!

Keeping these heritage buildings and the extensive grounds in shape takes lots of careful tending and we always have projects underway or in our future plans.

In keeping with that we recently applied for and were awarded a grant from the Helen E. Austin Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to increase the support of the walls of the Butteville School by adding to the existing foundation a layer of basalt rock.  This not only will increase the support for the structure, but will also add character to the building as basalt rock, being of the area,  could well have been used to form the foundation 150 years ago.

This project will add strength and character to the current structure and the opportunity for future generations to experience the one room school program and this piece of Oregon's history.

The Daughters of the American Revolution

The Newell House complex represents just a portion of the museum properties in Oregon that are owned and maintained by the Oregon State Society Daughters of the American Revolution.  They also own the Pioneer Mothers' Memorial Cabin in Champoeg, the Caples Museum Complex in Columbia City, and the Schminck Museum in Lakeview.

The DAR stepped up to purchase the Newell property in 1952 when it was destined for destruction, then raised the money to finance its reconstruction.  They continue to contribute many hours to the management and maintenance of all their historic properties.  You can find out more about these additional museums at the OSSDAR Website.
