Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are welcome at Newell House all year long for a wide range of roles.  Here are some volunteer opportunities that you might like to participate in sometime this year:

·         Master Gardeners are always appreciated at the Newell House Gardens.

·         Living History Interpreters for specific programs - call for information.

·         Do you have construction skills?  Would you be interested in building a fence? Other projects?

·         We have many volunteer opportunities to assist with our annual auction fundraiser and other events.

·         Do you have a special talent that would make a great living history program for our visitors?

If any of these activities sound interesting to you, please contact Judy Van Atta at Newell House
for more information about volunteer schedules and opportunities.

Projects:   The New Activity Porch is Complete!

Keeping these heritage buildings and the extensive grounds in shape takes lots of careful tending and we always have projects underway or in our future plans.  We have complete the new activity porch and have christened it Rebecca’s Tea Porch.   The students and teachers visiting the past two seasons have completely enjoyed the school program in a warm dry and pleasing setting.  Rebecca’s Tea Porch has also been used for meetings and teas.

Having this generous activity space will open many more options for adult and children's programs as well as providing more covered entertainment space. The generous windows provide lots of natural light and can be opened or removed in good weather to function more like an old-fashioned screen porch.

In addition to the new porch, The Juan Young Trust provide another grant towards the end of 2007 which provided a new walkway to the porch from the parking lot and from the front of the house all around to back to the new structure making it easy to reach from all directions.

2008 brings a new project!  The documentation and preservation of the collection of gowns worn by Oregon’s First Ladies dating to the 1850’s.  This project is made possible through a grant provided by the Helen E. Austin Pioneer Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.  Along with the grant, monies have been provided through the efforts of Immediate Past President of the Oregon Chapter Children of the American Revolution, Ashley Heckethorne’s project and in kind donations by David Krapes and Kay Demlow.

We appreciate greatly the support!

The Daughters of the American Revolution

The Newell House complex represents just a portion of the museum properties in Oregon that are owned and maintained by the Oregon State Society Daughters of the American Revolution.  They also own the Pioneer Mothers' Memorial Cabin in Champoeg, the Caples Museum Complex in Columbia City, and the Schminck Museum in Lakeview.

The DAR stepped up to purchase the Newell property in 1952 when it was destined for destruction, then raised the money to finance its reconstruction.  They continue to contribute many hours to the management and maintenance of all their historic properties.  You can find out more about these additional museums at the OSSDAR Website.
